Cabane tested full automation at Ramp. Hybrid GTM won.
← Back
We missed a week. Not because of a shortage of insights, it was simple one of those weeks!

In conversations with prospects we hear "

we tried Clay. " When we ask why they stopped, the answer is always "it was too complicated ."

Appreciating a solution like Clay requires a significant time investment.

Not just in Clay itself but in understanding the workflows, data points, responsibilities and ownership across revenue operations, sales and growth marketing. It requires a forward thinker comfortable with data who understands the mindset of sales teams.

This is the role of a GTM Engineer. At The GTM Studio we believe this role should sit inside your company, which is why we constantly nudge clients to train existing staff: SDRs, junior AEs or growth marketers. If you want to know more about building this capability internally, let us know. We can share more about training programs.

Insights

🎙️ Guillaume Cabane Says Hybrid GTM Beats Full Automation

This article really emphasises how we position The GTM Studio.

We are not AI end to end. We are AI middle to middle.

Guillaume Cabane, former VP Growth at Ramp and Segment, joined GTM Engineer School to break down why hybrid GTM outperforms full automation. Cabane tested both approaches at Ramp and found that pairing AI with human judgment consistently delivered stronger pipeline conversion than either alone. He argues true AI adoption across sales teams sits under 1% today and warns that building SaaS for SaaS is one of the riskiest bets a founder can make right now. His advice for GTM engineers: become the best in your specific field rather than chasing breadth.

Read more here (GTM Engineer School)

⚡ a16z Says the Intelligence Layer Is Replacing the CRM as GTM's Center of Gravity

a16z argues that GTM software value is migrating from the CRM database to the orchestration layer above it, the system of intelligence where agents pull context, prioritize accounts, and take action. For GTM engineers, this is validation that what they build IS the next generation of revenue infrastructure. Their survey found CRM usage actually rose after AI adoption because agent written data is richer, and reps using these tools hit quota at noticeably higher rates.

The takeaway: the orchestration work GTM engineers do today, stitching signals across CRM, enrichment, calls, and product telemetry, is where the next decade of enterprise GTM value will accumulate.

Read more here (a16z)

📱 One in Four B2B Mobiles Belongs to the Wrong Person

The reason The GTM Studio found this is interesting; the data providers are somewhat legacy! Lusha, Apollo, ZoomInfo. There are so many better providers available and more on their way. Need a list - let me know.

Elric Legloire tested 10 B2B mobile data providers against 1,400 US contacts and found that one in four mobiles belongs to the wrong person. For GTM engineers building automated outbound flows, this means data quality is the first bottleneck, not sequence logic. No single provider delivers both wide coverage and high accuracy. The highest performing stack pairs Wiza for reach with a persona specific second provider, running a waterfall ordered by cost. Bad mobile data costs a 10 rep team roughly $53K per year. The full benchmark dataset and interactive dashboard are available in the link below.

Read more here (Outbound Kitchen)

📊 Your Deal Size Decides What GTM Engineering You Need

Kyle Poyar analyzed 1,043 SaaS companies through ChartMogul and found that deal size at $10K MRR predicts everything that follows. Deer hunters ($10K per year deals) grow at 22% year over year, five times faster than mouse or rabbit hunters. That gap matters for GTM engineers because deal size determines which motions to automate: deer hunting unlocks real investment in signal based outbound, enrichment workflows, and agent driven prospecting.

Mouse and rabbit hunters face gross retention below 32%, making any automation investment harder to justify. Seventy percent of companies never change their target customer.

Read more here (Growth Unhinged)

That's a wrap for this week folks.
